Emergency dental care in Kyiv

Emergency dental care in Kyiv

Emergency dental care is necessary in cases of acute pain, tooth injury, swelling, or damage to restorations when the condition should not be postponed until a scheduled visit. The doctor first determines the cause of the symptoms and the extent of intervention required at this stage, and plans further treatment based on the diagnostic results.

In the network of dental clinics DDC (Dobrobut Dental Clinic), therapeutic, surgical, and pediatric dental services, diagnostics, and anesthetic support are available. If urgent dental care is needed in Kyiv, it is advisable to clarify the possibility of an appointment at a specific time with DDC in advance.

When to seek emergency dental care

Do not delay visiting the dentist when experiencing severe tooth pain, trauma, swelling, purulent discharge, or sudden damage to a tooth or restoration. Emergency dental assistance begins with assessing the condition, rather than with a universal procedure.

Acute tooth pain, pulpitis, and exacerbation of periodontitis

Acute tooth pain may be related to pulp, tissues near the root, a cracked tooth, or other conditions. If pulpitis is confirmed after diagnostics, subsequent treatment may include treatment of pulpitis.

Antibiotics are not a standard substitute for local dental intervention in most pulp and periapical conditions. They are prescribed based on specific indications, particularly with fever or pronounced malaise.

If apical periodontitis is confirmed, further tactics are determined based on diagnostic results; for more details, see treatment of periodontitis.

Tooth injuries, chips, dislocations, and broken restorations

After an injury, timely assessment of the tooth's position and mobility, damage to the crown, and the condition of surrounding tissues is necessary. A dislocated tooth, significant chip, broken crown, or damaged filling may require various actions—from temporary restoration or stabilization to endodontic or surgical treatment.

A completely avulsed permanent tooth requires immediate dental care. It should be held only by the crown, avoiding contact with the root; if the tooth cannot be immediately reinserted into the socket, it may be kept in milk or saline until it can be examined. An avulsed milk tooth should not be reinserted into the socket.

Swelling, flux, and purulent processes

Swelling of the gums or face requires dental evaluation, as it may be associated with an odontogenic infection, abscess, periodontitis, or another cause. The colloquial term "flux" is not an accurate diagnosis, so treatment is determined after examination.

If the swelling rapidly spreads to the face or neck, makes swallowing or breathing difficult, or there is a pronounced deterioration in general health, urgent medical assistance should be sought, rather than waiting for a scheduled dental appointment.

How an emergency appointment works at Dobrobut Dental Clinic

Initially, the source of pain or another reason for the visit is identified, after which the appropriate actions for the specific situation are selected. The doctor takes a medical history, performs a clinical examination, assesses the damaged tooth, and uses radiological diagnostics as indicated.

Further actions may be therapeutic or surgical. Rapid dental assistance in Kyiv does not imply a uniform procedure for everyone: the extent of intervention is determined after diagnosis.

What can be done immediately, and what should be planned

During the first appointment, the necessary and possible extent of care based on the established diagnosis is provided. Depending on the situation, this may include:

  • pain control and local anesthesia;
  • incision and drainage of an abscess as indicated;
  • stabilization of the injured tooth;
  • temporary restoration of the damaged tooth.

After controlling acute symptoms, further stages may be required—definitive restoration, canal treatment, orthopedic restoration, or other planned treatments. Complete treatment in one visit may not be possible in every situation.

Surgical intervention is also not an automatic solution for severe pain or swelling. Tooth extraction is considered based on clinical indications, particularly when after evaluation the tooth has no acceptable prospect for preservation or restoration.

Emergency care for children and patients with dental phobia

For children and patients with pronounced fear of dental treatment, the emergency care tactics are selected considering age, condition, extent of intervention, and ability to cooperate with the doctor. DDC has pediatric dentistry and child adaptation for treatment, and dental treatment under general anesthesia is available based on specific indications after anesthetic evaluation.

Dental phobia itself does not mean that everyone needs general anesthesia. If necessary, the possibility of dental treatment under anesthesia is discussed separately, taking into account the dental plan and anesthetic indications.

Why it is worth contacting Dobrobut Dental Clinic in emergencies

At DDC, within one dental network, therapeutic and surgical dentistry, pediatric care, radiological diagnostics, and anesthetic support are represented. This allows for determining the next treatment route based on the reason for the visit after initial assessment.

If the condition does not require immediate assistance, during a dentist consultation, the doctor may determine the further treatment plan and necessary stages.

In cases of acute pain or injury, you can quickly arrange an emergency visit through our network's 24/7 contact center, and if needed, involve the general emergency service "Dobrobut" (by dialing 5288). The network placement of our 5 branches in different districts of Kyiv (on both the right and left banks) allows for promptly reaching the nearest department.

Answers to popular questions

  • Guaranteed admission without prior appointment is not stated. In case of severe pain, it is advisable to call the clinic and clarify the nearest available appointment option.
  • You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever according to the instructions for the examination, if there are no contraindications. Do not heat the swelling, self-open an abscess, apply aspirin to the gums, or start taking antibiotics without a prescription. After an injury, if there is a tooth fragment, it is advisable to preserve it and bring it with you to the appointment.
  • No. In some cases, the problem can be resolved in one visit, while in others, acute symptoms are first identified or the condition is stabilized, and the next treatment phase is planned.
  • Such intervention is considered if, after diagnostics, the tooth has no acceptable prospect for preservation or there are other clinical indications for surgical treatment. Severe pain alone does not mean that the tooth needs to be extracted.
  • DDC dentistry is open on weekends from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The possibility of receiving an appointment at a specific evening time should be confirmed with the clinic; appointments after 7:00 PM and a round-the-clock work format are not available. If urgent dental assistance is needed, it is better to contact DDC before going and describe the main symptoms.
