Periodontology

The health of teeth is impossible without a strong foundation – healthy gums and bone tissue. At Dobrobut Dental Clinic, we understand that even perfectly treated cavities make no sense if the supporting structures of the tooth are destroyed by inflammation. Periodontology is one of the key areas of our work, where we combine modern diagnostic methods with a comprehensive approach to the treatment of gum diseases. If you are looking for an experienced specialist, the periodontists at our clinic will help you preserve your teeth for many years.

What is Periodontology and What Diseases Does It Address?

Periodontology is the science of the periodontal tissues: gums, periodontal ligament, root cement, and alveolar bone. These structures are what hold the tooth in the jaw and protect it from bacterial invasion.

The main task that a periodontist addresses is the elimination of chronic inflammation and the restoration of tissue integrity. When bacterial plaque and hard dental calculus accumulate beneath the gums, the body begins to destroy its own tissues in an attempt to distance itself from the infection site. This leads to the formation of periodontal pockets, root exposure, and ultimately, the loss of completely healthy teeth. Timely assistance from a specialist allows us to return the gums to a healthy state and prevent bone resorption.

When Should You Consult a Periodontist?

Gum diseases are often referred to as "silent killers of teeth," as they may not cause significant pain in the early stages. However, there are clear symptoms for which a dental periodontist should conduct an examination:

  • Bleeding gums during tooth brushing or while eating.
  • Swelling, redness, or changes in gum contour (gums become "flabby").
  • Persistent bad breath that does not go away after hygiene procedures.
  • Appearance of gaps between teeth or their visual elongation due to gum recession.
  • Mobility of teeth, even slight.
  • Sensation of discomfort or itching in the gums.

If you notice even one of these signs, you need a professional consultation with a periodontist to establish an accurate diagnosis and create a treatment plan.

How Does the Consultation and Diagnosis at Dobrobut Dental Clinic Take Place?

We believe that accurate diagnosis is the foundation of successful treatment. Therefore, in our clinic, the consultation with a periodontist is conducted according to international protocols:

  • Examination and history taking: the doctor analyzes the patient's complaints, overall health status, and risk factors (smoking, genetics, systemic diseases).
  • Filling out a periodontal chart: this is a mandatory stage in the diagnosis of periodontal tissues. Using a special thin probe, the periodontist measures the depth of each pocket at six points around each tooth. All data is entered into a digital periodontal chart, allowing for precise assessment of the extent of damage and tracking the dynamics of treatment.
  • X-ray diagnostics: we use computer tomography (CT) to assess the condition of the bone tissue. This allows us to see hidden areas of destruction that are not visible during a visual examination.
  • Use of binocular magnification or a microscope: for a detailed examination of hard-to-reach areas, we use a microscope, ensuring maximum precision.

Main periodontal diseases we treat

Our specialists have successful experience in therapy for various pathologies:

  • Gingivitis: superficial inflammation of the gums without destruction of the connective tissue apparatus. This is a reversible process that is usually eliminated after professional hygiene.
  • Periodontitis: a serious chronic disease in which the ligament and bone around the tooth are destroyed. We work with all degrees of severity of periodontitis, stabilizing the condition even in complicated cases.
  • Gum recession: a condition in which the gum level lowers, exposing the root of the tooth. This causes sensitivity and aesthetic discomfort.

Modern methods of gum treatment in our clinic

We use only evidence-based techniques aimed at eliminating the cause of the disease – bacterial biofilm.

  • SRP therapy (Scaling and Root Planing) – the gold standard for cleaning and smoothing the root surface. This is deep cleaning of the subgingival space using special hand instruments – curettes. Closed curettage is performed in the presence of periodontal pockets without surgical incisions. If the severity of the disease is significant, open curettage is applied using microsurgical techniques.
  • Vector therapy (Vector therapy) at the stage of supportive treatment. Vector therapy is a modern method for preventing diseases of the periodontal tissues. Unlike a standard ultrasonic scaler, the Vector device transmits oscillations parallel to the tooth surface, delicately removing bacterial plaque and microbial biofilm from the root surface and periodontal pockets, minimally traumatizing the tissues, making the procedure as comfortable as possible. The use of a special suspension allows for gentle cleaning and polishing of the root of the tooth from plaque, promoting rapid gum attachment, reducing inflammation, bleeding, and eliminating tooth sensitivity.
  • Compromise splinting of teeth with mobility. If teeth have become mobile due to loss of bone support, we perform splinting. Using a thin fiberglass strip or special retainer, the teeth are joined into a single block. This distributes the load and prevents further loosening, allowing the surrounding tissues to stabilize.
  • Surgical periodontology and soft tissue plasticity. When conservative methods are insufficient, we resort to surgery. This includes recession plasticity (covering exposed roots), vestibular deepening, and laser correction of the gums. The use of lasers allows for almost bloodless procedures and significantly speeds up rehabilitation. We also offer plasmolifting (plasma therapy) to stimulate regeneration – the introduction of the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma directly into the gums.

Supportive therapy and prevention of relapses

Periodontitis is a chronic disease that requires constant monitoring. After the main course of treatment, the patient transitions to the stage of supportive therapy. Comprehensive professional oral hygiene is carried out every 3-4 months, where the periodontist performs a control scaling and checks the condition of the pockets. Such prevention is the only way to avoid the return of the disease.

Questions and answers

What does a periodontist do?

A periodontist diagnoses, treats, and prevents diseases of the gums and periodontal tissues. The main task is to eliminate inflammation, preserve bone tissue, restore the health of the periodontium, and create conditions for the long-term preservation of one's teeth.

Can periodontitis be completely cured?

Periodontitis can be brought to a state of stable remission. This means that the disease will stop progressing, the gums will stop bleeding, and the bone will stop deteriorating. It is impossible to completely "cure" it (to restore lost bone), but it is quite real to stabilize the condition.

Is it painful to undergo gum treatment?

Modern methods at the stage of supportive therapy, such as Vector therapy and plasma therapy, are practically painless. During surgical interventions, we use effective anesthesia, so you will only feel comfort during the procedures.

Is it possible to place implants or braces if there are problems with the gums?

Only after stabilizing the condition of the periodontal tissues. Before placing implants or starting orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to eliminate inflammation and achieve control over the disease of the gums. This reduces the risk of complications, ensures a predictable treatment outcome, and long-term stability of the teeth and implants.

What happens if periodontal disease is not treated?

Persistent inflammation of the gums and bleeding will lead to gradual mobility of the teeth, and subsequently, tooth loss due to bone destruction.

Moreover, chronic inflammation in the oral cavity can negatively affect overall health and complicate the course of some systemic diseases – cardiovascular, endocrine in diabetes.
