Professional teeth cleaning

Professional teeth cleaning

A healthy and radiant smile starts not with whitening, but with basic care. At Dobrobut Dental Clinic, we are convinced that regular professional teeth cleaning is the most reliable investment in your health. Even the most meticulous home hygiene cannot completely remove plaque in hard-to-reach places, which over time leads to serious dental problems. Our clinic offers a comprehensive approach, where digital monitoring and the expertise of our doctors guarantee safety and comfort during every procedure.

What is professional oral hygiene and what problems does it solve?

Many patients ask: is oral hygiene just cleaning or a therapeutic procedure? The answer is clear - it is the foundation of preventive dentistry. Professional hygiene includes the removal of soft and pigmented plaque, microbial biofilm, and hard dental deposits that cannot be removed with a toothbrush.

The main goal of the procedure is to reduce the bacterial load on the body. Pathogenic microorganisms that accumulate in the oral cavity release toxins that destroy enamel and provoke chronic inflammation. Comprehensive teeth cleaning addresses the following tasks:

  • Eliminates bad breath (halitosis);
  • Prevents the occurrence of cavities and gum inflammation;
  • Restores the natural shade of the teeth.

Indications for comprehensive professional oral hygiene

Professional hygiene is recommended for every patient at least twice a year. It is especially important to conduct it in the presence of the following conditions:

  • Accumulation of soft dental plaque that cannot be completely eliminated during home care.
  • Presence of tartar (supra- or subgingival deposits).
  • Bleeding, swelling, or inflammation of the gums during tooth brushing or eating.
  • Bad breath related to the accumulation of bacterial plaque.
  • Preparation for dental treatment: orthodontic, orthopedic, surgical, implantation, or teeth whitening.
  • Presence of orthopedic and orthodontic constructions (braces, crowns, veneers) that require careful hygiene monitoring.
  • Prevention and supportive treatment of periodontal tissue diseases.
  • Presence of pigmented plaque caused by the consumption of coffee, tea, tobacco, or other colorants.

Contraindications: when teeth cleaning is not recommended

Despite its safety, hygienic teeth cleaning has certain limitations that the doctor must consider during the examination:

  • Acute infectious and viral diseases (ARVI, herpes during the acute stage, days 1-4).
  • First and third trimesters of pregnancy (it is preferable to perform cleaning in the second trimester, although there are no direct prohibitions).

Main methods of professional cleaning

At Dobrobut Dental Clinic, we use a comprehensive protocol that combines various technologies to achieve the perfect result. This is known as deep teeth cleaning, which covers all surfaces of the tooth - from the visible part to subgingival areas.

Ultrasonic cleaning (scaling) for tartar removal

This is the first step aimed at removing tartar. The scaler device generates ultrasonic waves that delicately break the bond between the tartar and enamel. Scaling effectively cleans not only the visible part of the tooth but also subgingival deposits, which are the main cause of gum inflammation.

Air Flow method for removing plaque and pigmentation

This is a professional method for removing soft plaque, biofilm, and pigmentation using a jet of water, air, and special powder under pressure.

Enamel polishing

The final stage of cleaning - polishing with a paste using specialized brushes and rubber polishers to make the tooth surface perfectly smooth. This has not only aesthetic but also practical significance: on smooth enamel, plaque accumulates significantly slower.

How teeth cleaning is performed in dentistry: main stages

The process in our clinic takes from 40 to 60 minutes and consists of the following steps:

  1. Diagnosis: the doctor conducts an examination and uses a plaque indicator to show the patient the problem areas that the patient does not adequately clean at home.
  2. Ultrasonic and manual scaling: removal of tartar and cleaning of periodontal pockets.
  3. Air Flow stage: removal of soft and pigmented plaque.
  4. Polishing: giving teeth shine and smoothness.
  5. Fluoridation: application of a special gel or varnish with a high fluoride content to strengthen enamel and prevent sensitivity.

How Professional Cleaning Differs from Home Hygiene

Many believe that an electric toothbrush or irrigator can replace a visit to the dentist. However, professional teeth cleaning has advantages that are not available at home:

  • Specialized modern equipment: ultrasound and Air Flow act at the micro-level, removing bacterial biofilm.
  • Access to hard-to-reach areas: the dentist can see the subgingival part of the tooth and the back molars under magnification.
  • Control: the dentist detects cavities at the stain stage, allowing timely treatment without pain and significant financial expenses.

Recommendations After Professional Oral Hygiene:

To maintain results for as long as possible, we recommend following certain rules:

  • Refrain from eating and drinking for 1-2 hours.
  • Do not smoke.
  • New toothbrush: after removing bacterial plaque, be sure to replace your old toothbrush to avoid re-infection.

Professional Teeth Cleaning for Children

At Dobrobut Dental Clinic, special attention is given to young patients. Comprehensive teeth cleaning for children is carried out using the most delicate powders and pastes with pleasant flavors. This helps not only preserve the health of milk teeth but also instills a positive attitude towards dentistry and the culture of self-care from an early age.

Questions and Answers

Does professional teeth cleaning hurt?

For most patients, the procedure is completely comfortable. Discomfort may occur only in the presence of severe gum inflammation or exposed tooth necks. In such cases, we offer local anesthesia.

How long does professional teeth cleaning take?

On average, the procedure takes from 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the amount of dental deposits and the complexity of the clinical case.

Can teeth cleaning be done with braces, crowns, or implants?

Yes, and it is even essential! The presence of these structures requires special attention. For implants and crowns, we use special non-traumatic attachments and soft powders.

Does professional cleaning damage tooth enamel?

No. Ultrasound and Air Flow act selectively, only destroying plaque and calculus. The structure of the enamel remains intact. Moreover, fluoride treatment at the end of the procedure additionally strengthens it.

How long after the procedure can I eat and drink staining beverages?

You can eat after an hour. However, it is better to avoid staining beverages (coffee, strong tea) for 24–48 hours to stabilize the result.

How often should I visit a hygienist or periodontist?

The standard recommendation is once every 6 months. However, for patients with braces, those with periodontal diseases, or those with a high tendency to form calculus, the doctor may recommend visits every 3–4 months. Regular professional hygiene is the best way to avoid expensive treatments in the future.
